• Medium: oil on canvas
One day, the sweetest little girl walked into my studio with her mom. She was about four years old and wearing blue jeans, a lavender vest covered with shiny hearts, and pink cowboy boots. Her dark coffee skin and shining eyes completed the look, but it was not until I asked her for her name, did I understand who she was. She answered me from the bottom of her boots through the top of her braided head, and pointing to her belly as she stuck it out, proclaimed: “I am Zuzu! I am Zuzu!” Well, clearly, I can see that! Zuzu left such ebullient energy in her wake that I wanted to capture it on canvas, as well as I could, and set to work to embody the infectious exuberance of Zuzu on canvas.
I dipped into my flow and expressed all the emotions and energy that I felt from Zuzu and for Zuzu. I began with a brush but ended up working with my hands. I did not want anything in the way of my channeling Miss Zuzu. The edges remain primarily white, save for some paint that wrapped around from the front. When I finally stepped back to see my work, I was shocked to realize that I had actually carved hearts into the space surrounding her form, which has a heart nestled in its body! For me, Zuzu is all that we need. The potential stored up in this little girl is meant for the world. Wherever you go, my Zuzu, may you always have your heart as your guide.
I have signed this painting on the front, and the back contains the title, materials I used, my name, signature again, the year, and the dimensions.
