[American, b.1973]
ARTIST STATEMENT
I am focused on creating work that offers a haven for humanity where imagination is free to explore. My work is influenced by my travels, my love of nature, and living along the New England coastline.
I create meditative spaces that invite curiosity. As a multidisciplinary artist, my representational and abstract paintings, inks, nontraditional sculptures, and large-scale photographic works are characterized by organic, natural forms and the use of nontraditional materials. I paint some of my landscapes and abstracts with my fingers and unexpected colors, and I use macro photography to magnify the beauty often overlooked. I redefine everyday items like windshield wiper blades and coffee filters in my sculpture. I love highlighting the effect of light with reflective and translucent materials, metallic pigments, remote-controlled lights, glow-in-the-dark paint, and gold leaf. Most of my work has hidden positive messages to encourage imagination further.
In my current work, Stasis Collection, I want to offer something abstract yet familiar with my freehand sculptural forms in sophisticated color palettes designed to pique curiosity. In conceptualizing this work, I was inspired by what unifies humanity: our reliance upon the Earth and Sun. I worked with the concepts of simplicity, peace, connection, balance, and space by sketching the relationships created by overlapping simple forms using only two harmonized colors. This reveals new shapes and contours in the positive and negative space, much like viewing an eclipse. Because of their simplicity, I have snuggled my positive message on the bottoms of my Stasis paintings. When framed viewing access is available via a tiny portal.
I want my organic abstract and representational paintings, installations, sculptures, and large-scale photographic works to resonate with you, sparking your imagination.
As a multidisciplinary visual artist, Kate creates frameworks to spark the imagination, infused by her former careers as a teacher and graphic designer. Across all disciplines, to creations and commissions, Kate adds hidden positive words, metallics, remote-controlled lighting, and even trash.
Kate says, "Making art allows me to communicate in a way that words cannot. Working in this pure form of expression, I create art to spark imagination and invite wonder."
Kate trained at RISD and Skidmore College and has built her artistic practice from formal teachings, continued self-education, and the psychology of color. Her work has earned multiple awards, been written in articles, and has been invited into exhibitions. She was selected by RISCA for a solo exhibition at the Block Island Airport and has been featured in many other solo and group exhibitions, including the Providence Art Club, Artbox Gallery, Zürich, Switzerland, and the Bristol Art Museum, where Kate was said to be one of twelve "regional abstract artists to watch." Kate's Hope For The Planet aerial sculpture, spanning eight feet, was invited to be installed in the Rhode Island State House, where visitors could add their wish for the planet to the 800 wishes already present. Her art is in private collections worldwide, including a 12-foot work in the New England Institute of Technology residence hall and hotels along the Florida coast.
Kate enjoys giving artist talks and being a repeat celebrity artist for Providence's Gallery Night Tours. Her studio is in Hope Artiste Village in Pawtucket, Rhode Island.
