They are luminous, owing to light reflecting to your eyes from each of the many layers of translucent paint.
I mix my color pairs based on techniques used by figurative painters to give atmospheric perspective to landscapes and depth to objects in space. My simple, sculptural forms play with positive and negative space. Hard-edged, curvilinear, free-hand forms float above yet communicate with their harmonized color field backgrounds, thanks to something known as simultaneous contrast, which is the tendency of colors to shift based on their adjacent surroundings. The proximity of the two colors determines how your eyes translate the colors in relation to each other, giving you an optical illusion of depth and shading.
In conceptualizing this work, I began by focusing on what unifies humanity: our reliance upon the Earth and Sun- two spheres millions of miles apart, yet integral to our existence. I worked with the concepts of simplicity, peace, connection, balance, and space. And began sketching relationships created by overlapping these orbs using two colors. New shapes and contours are revealed in the positive and negative space. Natural forms I see around me influence this work: the boundary between my dog’s muzzle and his bed or a cast shadow of a tree across snowy footprints...
I paint freehand, without using tape or stencils, and varnish, each with a matte finish. Each has my signature golden heart on the bottom side of the canvas as a talisman of the most potent force, LOVE.
This collection evolved from my Metamorphosis paintings, where I play with atmospheric perspective with abstract forms but with more energy, and from my Mountain Vista paintings, where I use blocks of color and abstract shapes to define space.
