This collection evolved from my Stasis paintings as I sought to reincorporate luminosity into my work. Giving my Stasis forms radiance, gold leaf activates them, yet they remain balanced within their color fields. Light and shadow play upon the textured shimmering surface, enhancing the illusion of depth. I create these works on canvas and wooden panels, framed in a minimal white wooden float frame with a tiny portal to view your golden heart on the bottom and secured with a French Cleat.
I owe a debt of gratitude to Josef Albers and his teachings on the interaction of color. This collection of work is my best use of this exquisite law: we understand color in relation to colors that adjoin.
In my Golden Stasis works, light shifts the gold leaf forms' value (lightness or darkness) more than the value of the painted color field; therefore, the painted surface seems to change in value (lightness or darkness) in response to the light shifting upon the gold leaf. This gives the optical illusion that the golden form is concave on a different plane than the background color, and as you move to the left or right, it seems to bend.
