BIO

Kate Wilson [American, b.1973]

I like sparking imagination in a myriad of ways! I create my works by refining nature and emotion into abstracted forms that connect one with the sublime, that place where feelings hold dominance over vocabulary.

As a contemporary artist, I am inspired by the balance between precision and freedom. I create meditative spaces that invite curiosity. My work is influenced by my extensive travels, love of nature, and living along the coast of Rhode Island.

My abstract and representational paintings, installations, sculptures, and large-scale photographic works are characterized by simplified organic forms and nontraditional materials that can be described as Color Field, Minimalism, and Fauvism, highlighting process, color, and contour.

I create works pushing boundaries and materials by exploring beyond my formal training, blending skills with my penchant for innovation. Because curiosity is the backbone of my artistic process, I build upon discoveries as I create. I work within the creative process flow and produce works across multiple mediums, with any material that inspires: paint, ink, LED lights, photography, magnets, paper, silicone, plexiglass, or up-cycled materials, such as used windshield wiper blades. My signature use of refined balance ever guides me.

My current work, poetic hard-edged freehand paintings, focuses on refining nature and emotion with elegant simplicity in my Stasis & Metamorphosis Collections. Their graceful sculptural and curvilinear forms in sophisticated color palettes seem to float in the atmosphere.

As a former teacher, I understand the importance of wonder and discovery to the human psyche. I work to create visual stories that ask viewers to be curious and interact with my work. My largest installation to date is about the elevation of human connection: Hope For the Planet, an eight-foot aerial sculpture made with coffee filters, magnets, and well over 800 collected wishes from humans. I add details to select pieces: hidden positive words, metallics, remote-controlled lighting, and even trash.

I trained as an artist at RISD and Skidmore College and have built my artistic practice from formal teachings, bolstered by my continued self-education at workshops and explorations into the science behind how humans see. I am most inspired by Josef Albers, Ellsworth Kelly, Georgia O'Keeffe, Matisse, Monet, and the incredible 9th Street women: Joan Mitchell, Lee Krasner, Elaine de Kooning, Grace Hartigan, and Helen Frankenthaler, all of whom expanded the definition of an artist while staying true to themselves as creatives.

My work has earned multiple awards, been written in articles, and invited into exhibitions. I was honored to be selected by RISCA for a solo exhibition at the Block Island Airport during the summer rush. My work has been featured in many other exhibitions: most notably, a solo exhibition of my finger-painted oils, national juried exhibitions at Providence Art Club, at Artbox Gallery, Zürich, Switzerland, and The Abstract at the Bristol Art Museum, where I was invited to be one of twelve regional abstract artists to watch. My Hope For The Planet aerial sculpture was invited to be installed in the Rhode Island State House's rotunda. My art is in private collections worldwide, including a 12-foot installation in the New England Institute of Technology residence hall and hotels along the Florida coast.

I am a warm and friendly creative who enjoys giving artist talks and being a repeat celebrity artist for Providence's Gallery Night Tours. My studio is in Hope Artiste Village in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, where I welcome visitors and work on unique commission projects. Stop in and say hello!
